Chapter 5814: Limited Intelligence
Long Chen couldn't help but furrow his brow at a time like this. The words being spoken clearly indicated that someone had quite a bit of nonsense in their head. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have had any idea how long you'd have to fight or how many would have perished. I'm not seeking your gratitude, and there's no need to utter such hurtful words.
"Elder Xifeng, what nonsense are you spouting? If it weren't for him, we wouldn't have won this victory, let alone know how many could leave here alive." A fierce woman retorted.
The so-called Elder Xifeng was an elderly man with wrinkled skin. Upon receiving a scolding from the clan leader, he pursed his lips, glanced at Long Chen, and remained silent, though his face clearly showed his defiance.
The woman quickly turned to Long Chen and said, "I'm truly sorry. We, the Longhuai Clan, don't have the brightest minds. In your human terms, you could say we have thick heads and lack enlightenment. Don't mind us. By the way, I'm Huai Minjun. You just introduced yourself as Mo Nian earlier, right?"
"No, no, no, I was just messing with them. Mo Nian is my brother. I'm Long Chen," Long Chen quickly responded. Although the old man's words had made him uncomfortable, the clan leader seemed to be reasonable, which lifted his spirits.
"Clan Leader, this Long Chen is an old friend of mine. He rescued me when I was... when I was trapped," Huai Shu squeezed in, eager to explain.
Huai Minjun paused, "It's him?"
When Huai Shu had found them, the peculiar aura emanating from his body had made the Longhuai Clan hesitant to acknowledge him. Eventually, it had alarmed Huai Minjun, and when Huai Shu revealed his ordeal on the Ghost Ship and mentioned Long Chen, she had assumed he was the savior. However, she hadn't probed further at that time. Now, she finally understood that the one who had helped them was the same person who had saved Huai Shu. This revelation eased her suspicions.
Huai Minjun's smile became warmer. "So, we're old friends. Thanks for helping our Longhuai Clan twice."
Speaking these words, Huai Minjun unexpectedly gave Long Chen a slight bow. Long Chen quickly returned the gesture, saying, "You're too kind. My relationship with the Undying Abyssal Willow Clan runs deep, so, in a way, we're all friends."
Upon hearing the words "Undying Abyssal Willow," the members of the Undying Longhuai Clan were deeply moved. After all, the Undying Longhuai Clan's loyalty was to the Undying Abyssal Willow Clan. When Huai Shu had returned to the Undying Longhuai Clan, he had shared this information with Huai Minjun. However, she had not paid much attention to it back then. Now, she realized that the one who had come to their aid was the same person who had saved Huai Shu. This revelation instantly put her at ease.
Huai Minjun's smile became more affable. "You're an old friend of ours, then. Thanks for your help on two occasions, to our Longhuai Clan."
At this, Long Chen expressed his gratitude, and the atmosphere became friendlier.
After all, the Undying Abyssal Willow Clan was renowned, and there were countless factions claiming to have ties with them. Thus, she hadn't even bothered to remember Long Chen's name back then. She hadn't anticipated that the person who had once helped Huai Shu would come to their aid today, which left her feeling somewhat ashamed.
She had wanted to express her gratitude for Long Chen's previous rescue of Huai Shu, but at the time, she had been too busy with other matters and hadn't given it much thought. She wasn't like the human race, which could talk at length about everything, and the Undying Longhuai Clan wasn't skilled in using flattery.
"Since we've just been through a major battle, to avoid unnecessary trouble, how about we find another place to talk?" Huai Minjun tentatively suggested.
"Your word is our command," Long Chen replied with a smile.
The strong members of the Undying Longhuai Clan immediately departed from the battlefield. A battle of this magnitude could easily attract other powerful beings. In the current chaotic world, danger was ever-present, and many of their members were injured from the recent battle. Encountering formidable races posed the risk of total annihilation.
After traveling for some time, the Undying Longhuai Clan's leaders finally came to a halt, giving everyone a chance to rest. During their journey, they had encountered two smaller migrating factions. However, as soon as they sensed the presence of the Undying Longhuai Clan, these factions fled without daring to confront them.
Now, the leaders of the Undying Longhuai Clan had gathered together, totaling seventeen individuals, all of them late-stage God Emperors. Originally, Huai Shu's strength didn't qualify him to participate, but due to his relationship with Long Chen, he had to remain, which made him somewhat reserved.
"Long Chen, it's not that we don't trust you, but there are some matters we need to understand from you," an elder began.
This elder was the one who had previously warned about the human race's cunning and need for vigilance, Elder Xifeng.
Long Chen replied calmly, "Feel free to ask, but remember not to use an interrogative tone, or I'll feel uncomfortable."
"Long Chen, please don't misunderstand. We don't doubt you, but because it concerns our imperial clan, we have to be cautious. Please don't take offense," Huai Minjun said apologetically.
"Imperial clan?" Long Chen exclaimed.
Huai Minjun nodded, "That's right, the Undying Abyssal Willow Clan is the imperial clan of our Undying lineage. So, when you mention a connection to the Undying lineage, we must proceed with caution."
"Furthermore, we've suffered significant losses at the hands of your human race. You've deceived us many times," the elder couldn't help but express his frustration.
"Xifeng..." Huai Minjun gave the elder an angry glare, but he still wore a discontented expression. "I'm speaking the truth."
"Why must you speak the harsh truth like this? Even if you do, can't you say it privately?" another elder chimed in.
Observing the expressions of Huai Minjun and her companions, Long Chen suddenly understood. They had been deceived by the human race, more than once. What's more, these people spoke their minds, without the ability to conceal their secrets. As Huai Minjun had mentioned, their intelligence wasn't very high, making them easily duped. Therefore, they harbored suspicions about everyone, especially the human race, who had taken advantage of them on multiple occasions. Thinking about this, Long Chen felt a sense of enlightenment.
Moreover, judging by the elder named Xifeng, it was clear he was someone who spoke his mind, and the other elder, although he advised Xifeng, also seemed to have limited intelligence.
With this newfound understanding, Long Chen's previous irritation had completely dissipated. He smiled and said, "Please, don't be wary of me. My assistance this time was purely coincidental. Also, about our encounter, there is one favor I would like to ask: I hope you can take me to the Undying Abyssal Willow Clan. I'm looking for two friends, or rather, they're more like family to me."
Long Chen thought of Chu Yao and also of Liu Ruyan, and his voice trembled with emotion.
